Ace hated it
And it’s very, very left-wing politically, for no good reason.
Sample quote– the very lame villain, who seems more like an aging Eurotrash party boy who tried to slip your sister a ruffie than a threat to global stability, on why he’s undermining a left-wing Bolivian government to install a right-wing general:
“After all, we can’t let governments just keep giving resources to the people, yes?”
Oh, so subtle.
I wasn’t sure WHAT the general was supposed to be, which probably means Ace is right in not liking Quantum of Solace.
However, QoS has two things in its favor:
1. It blatantly has Mr. Green the bad guy looking and sounding ecologically a lot like “Mr. Green” himself, Al Gore- I posted this earlier, but here it is again,
Eco-entrepeneur older version,
Eco-entrepeneur younger, streamlined version without the weird thing Gore does to cover the bald spot,
and
2. the most important reason, Daniel Craig.
Oh yeah.
Worth the price of admission alone.
On the other hand, when I go to a Bond movie I expect Bond to drive an Aston Martin, which he did, Daniel Craig to look his handsome and rugged, which he did, and a couple of good chase scenes, which it had.
You should know ahead of time that this Bond installment is the only one in the franchise which is an actual sequel to the one which preceeded it. Bond was only one girl away from a chastity vow on this one, too.
Ace also liked Daniel Craig’s neckties. I can’t say I was looking at Craig’s…neckties.
Here’s the trailer:
UPDATE, Tuesday 18 November
Phyllis Chesler has an intriguing angle to the Bond story,
Well, there is one love affair in this movie and its the unspoken one between Craig’s Bond and M. Yes: A virile, younger man and a powerful, older woman. Shades of Oedipus and Jocasta. But, their intimacy, which includes anger, rebellion, fears of betrayal and punishment, and above all, their deep, mutual dependence, is real.
Now, if the producers ever developed that further, imagine the fun we’ll all have!
