Horrible destruction: Barbuda and St Martin

Daily Mail reports:
Paradise destroyed: Hurricane Irma wipes out TWO Caribbean islands as it batters Puerto Rico with 185mph winds after destroying 95 per cent of tiny Barbuda and St Martin, killing at least ten

-‘Monster’ Hurricane Irma started hammering Puerto Rico with 185mph winds and heavy rain late last night

-The category 5 storm reduced Caribbean islands of Barbuda and St Martin to rubble with deadly destruction

-Roughly 95% of homes and properties were destroyed on both islands with Barbuda now ‘barely habitable’

-At least eight people died on the French part of St Martin, while a two-year-old child was killed in Barbuda

-Some 900,000 people are without power on Puerto Rico and at least 50,000 people are without water

-Irma was following projected path that would see it hit Dominican Republic, Turks and Caocos [sic] and Haiti today

-The hurricane is expected to continue past eastern Cuba before veering north for Florida at the weekend

-Red Cross said it is preparing for ‘a major humanitarian response’ as UN estimated 49million will be affected

-Mandatory evacuations were ordered in the Florida Keys and parts of Miami as the scale of the storm emerged

The Stanford Bank scam & the missing crook

stanfordbank1

Accused Financier Under Federal Drug Investigation

Authorities tell ABC News that as part of the investigation, which has been ongoing since last year, Mexican authorities detained one of Stanford’s private planes. According to officials, checks found inside the plane were believed to be connected to the Gulf cartel, reputed to be Mexico’s most violent gang. Authorities say Stanford could potentially face criminal charges of money laundering and bribery of foreign officials.

Authorities say the SEC action against Stanford Tuesday may have complicated the federal drug investigation.

The federal investigation, however, did not stop Stanford from using corporate money to become a big man at last year’s Democratic convention in Denver.

A video posted on the firm’s web-site shows Stanford, now sought by U.S. Marshals, being hugged by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and praised by former President Bill Clinton for helping to finance a convention-related forum and party put on by the National Democratic Institute.

Moe Lane asks, Did Mexican drug money help subsidize the Democratic Convention?

Over in Venezuela, Venezuela ‘takes over local Stanford bank’

I’ll be talking about this in today’s podcast at 11AM Eastern.

I’m also working on a post and roundup for Real Clear World. Will link to it here, of course.
