Go ahead and Kiss the Girl, if you dare

It angers me that a natural impulse to kiss an attractive member of the opposite sex is condemned as “toxic masculinity,” a sophomoric opinion coming from an actual sophomore  who, by doing so, is engaging in toxic feminism … with the support of Princeton University.

Just askin’ UPDATED

This came up on my Twitter feed,

"Money should be put to use for good reasons, not for private bank accounts." – Margaret Chan of @WHO #FungForum

— Princeton University (@Princeton) November 2, 2015

Margaret Chan, from the People’s Republic of China, is Director-General of the World Health Organization. She was part of the Fung Forum which Princeton University joined today.

Princeton U. costs $63,420/yr for undergrads. A student without financial aid would cough up over a quarter of a million dollars over four years, most likely from the parents’ private bank account(s). Pricey, for propaganda you can get for free on Twitter.

But I digress.

So I asked,

@Princeton @WHO Why isn't a private bank account from legally hard-earned money a good reason?

— Fausta (@Fausta) November 2, 2015

So far,

@Fausta Thanks for sharing your question. We've reached out to Dublin for more context on these remarks.

— Princeton University (@Princeton) November 2, 2015

As Drudge says, developing.

UPDATE,

@Fausta We've just tweeted a correction, as our original tweet was inaccurate. Thank you for raising a good question.

— Princeton University (@Princeton) November 2, 2015

So much for that.

The leakers: Who’s to gain?

Princeton University professor Sean Wilentz, contributing editor of The New Republic, asks, Would You Feel Differently About Snowden, Greenwald, and Assange If You Knew What They Really Thought?

The payoff of the Snowden affair for Putin and the Russians thus far has been substantial. Just as the Kremlin’s human rights reputation, already woeful under Putin, has spiraled downward, it is able to swoop in to rescue an American political outlaw, supposedly persecuted by the Obama administration. The dissident journalist Masha Gessen has observed, “The Russian propaganda machine has not gotten this much mileage out of a U.S. citizen since Angela Davis’s murder trial in 1971.”

Go read the whole thing.

Princeton University is already paying taxes

As you may know, I’m running for Princeton Municipal Council.

The Wall Street Journal had an op-ed article by James Piereson and Naomi Schaefer Riley: Why Shouldn’t Princeton Pay Taxes?
Money-making ‘nonprofit’ universities don’t pay a fair share of the costs of local public
. I did a post on the real issue affecting Princeton residents, i.e., fiscal responsibility doesn’t grow from more revenues – you must recognize that the taxpayer is not an open checkbook.

The Princeton Patch did an article on my post, Should Princeton University Pay Property Taxes?

Please read my update, Princeton University is already paying taxes (cross-posted at the Princeton Patch). Contrary to what Piereson & Riley assert, PU is already paying taxes.

It’s easier to get into Princeton than it is to get a job in this economy

Princeton University’s acceptance rate is 10%.

6% got jobs when they applied at McDonald’s:
One Million Apply for 62,000 Jobs…with McDonald’s

The world’s biggest restaurant chain reported that it received one million applicants for open positions, which resulted in 62,000 people gaining employment. Another 900,000 plus were turned down.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman said the company had planned to hire only 50,000 new employees. But the intense demand prompted it to take on an additional 24% in staff.

No word on how many of the new hires are Ivy League grads.

UPDATE, Saturday 7 May,
Welcome, Instapundit readers!

Restrepo director and photographer killed in Libya; film playing tonight on PU campus

Restrepo co-director Tim Hetherington was killed in Libya,

Two photojournalists — Oscar-nominated filmmaker Tim Hetherington and Getty photographer Chris Hondros — were killed on Wednesday after coming under fire in the besieged Libyan town of Misrata.

Hetherington, co-director of Afghan war documentary “Restrepo”, and Hondros were among a group working together on Tripoli Street, a main thoroughfare and scene of fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.

“It was quiet and we were trying to get away and then a mortar landed and we heard explosions,” Spanish photographer Guillermo Cervera said.

Doctors first said that Hetherington had died while Hondros had suffered brain injuries. Getty Images later released a statement saying Hondros had died of his injuries.

Hetherington, who won the 2007 World Press Photo of the Year award, co-directed with Sebastian Junger the 2010 documentary “Restrepo”, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary

Restrepo is playing tonight at 8PM on campus. Attendance is limited to Princeton University students and staff.

Princeton: University Scraps Arts and Transit Plans UPDATED

The Dinky stays where it is…for now,
University Scraps Arts and Transit Plans (emphasis added)

The first phase of the proposed Arts and Transit Neighborhood plans involved the creation of a Steven Holl-designed arts complex, the conversion of the existing Dinky buildings into cafe and retail space, the move of the Dinky farther from the downtown into a transit plaza that would include an indoor waiting area and the Wawa, a roundabout at University Place and Alexander Road, a separate pedestrian crossing for Forbes College, and a new entryway into the Lot 7 garage.

The Dinky had already been moved away from the center of town once’ this move would have made it even more impractical.

The University is Not.Pleased.

With respect to future collaborations between the University and the two municipalities, and how Monday’s outcome affects that relationship, Mr. Durkee noted, “I don’t think it helps at all.”

That’s tact!

UPDATE:
“Tact”, and possibly revenge?

However, there may be an unexpected downside to halting the planned Arts and Transit Neighborhood for the Township and the Borough. The University currently supports the community with voluntary payments in lieu of taxes, or PILOTs. Administrators said that the cancellation of the Arts and Transit Neighborhood would likely have an impact on the payments.

The University’s current agreement with the Borough is set to expire this year and was expected to be renewed.

“I think that is completely up in the air at the moment,” Tilghman said of the renewal. “There is no question that what happened last night is going to factor into our thinking about this going forward.”

The negative outcome of Monday’s meeting may have even further-reaching consequences, as Durkee said the community’s failure to move the Arts and Transit Neighborhood project forward would put a damper on the future of the University’s relationship with the town.

“It doesn’t augur well for future relationships when the response to the University’s request for support … is the response we got last night,” he said.

Developing…

Mario Vargas Llosa wins the #Nobel in Literature UPDATED

The Nobel Literature Committee has awarded the Prize to the best living Spanish-language writer, and one of the best writers in the history of literature:
Mario Vargas Llosa Wins Nobel Literature Prize

Vargas Llosa is not only a white male, he’s also a free-market libertarian who believes in democracy. His books have been bestsellers for decades.

He’s currently teaching at Princeton, and will be giving a public lecture at Princeton U next Monday – I expect it’ll be mobbed.

——————————–

I’ll mention this news item briefly in today’s podcast at 11AM Eastern, and then talk about American politics with Moe Lane.
——————————

UPDATE
Nick Gillespie:

Vargas Llosa is one of those rare literary creatures who has not only helped to define the aesthetic stylistic innovation of his period but directly influence its events.

The author of over 30 books – and very nearly the president of Peru – Vargas Llosa is one of the preeminent public intellectuals of the post-war era and one of the great libertarian heroes of the age at least since his highly public criticism of the Castro regime starting in the early 1970s. An outspoken critic of authoritarian regimes on the right and the left, who else but Vargas Llosa would have called for the legalization of drugs while addressing the American Enterprise Institute’s annual dinner a few years back? He has been a consistent voice against repression wherever he finds it and an eloquent champion of freedom in all its manifestations. His insistence that all aspects of liberty – political, economic, and cultural – are inextricably linked is as powerful as it is rare among writers of his stature.

Reason has published two articles by Vargas Llosa: The Children of Columbus, and Global Village or Global Pillage?
Why we must create a universal culture of liberty
