Mexico: Following earthquake and hurricane, the Dems attack Trump

While we in Florida and the Caribbean were getting pounded by Hurricane Irma two weeks after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, Mexico was hit by a 8.1-magnitude earthquake and Hurricane Katia,

Mexico Intensifies Recovery Efforts After Earthquake and Hurricane. At least 90 were killed in the 8.1-magitude quake late Thursday and two died in the storm that hit the country hours later

At least 90 people were killed in the 8.1-magnitude quake, which struck at midnight Thursday off the Pacific Coast of southern Mexico. The worst hit was the Zapotec indigenous city of Juchitán in Oaxaca state. In all, 71 people died in Oaxaca state, 15 in neighboring Chiapas state and four in the Gulf state of Tabasco, local authorities said.

Hundreds of aftershocks have struck since Thursday night’s temblor. A 4.4 quake was recorded Sunday morning near the Oaxaca coast by Mexico’s Seismic Service.

Hours later, Hurricane Katia, a Category 2 storm that had lingered offshore for days, hit Veracruz state. The storm weakened quickly as it moved inland but dropped rain that swelled rivers over their banks, collapsed roads and killed two people in the state capital of Xalapa.

Here in the U.S., Robert Reich couldn’t let a crisis go to waste, and posted on Facebook,

The Mexican government has rescinded its generous offer to aid in Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts. Officials offered food, generators, and medical aid, but Trump never responded. Nor did Trump offer help to Mexico following the massive 8.1-magnitude earthquake there last Thursday that killed 95 people and injured hundreds. In fact, Trump couldn’t even muster a tweet to express condolences.

Once again, Trump has thumbed his nose at one of our closest allies and brought shame on our country. He is no leader; he’s an international embarrassment. What do you think?

Reich really does not want to know what I think, of course; he’s simply echoing the Dem talking points as laid out in the LA Times headline, After an earthquake and a hurricane — and Trump’s failure to send condolences — Mexico rescinds offer of aid to U.S.

Never mind the fact that Mexico is already overstretched in a crisis, and that the U.S. had already responded. The Dems are carping at Pres. Trump because he didn’t tweet condolences.

The LA Times got around to mentioning Secretary Tillerson on the last two paragraphs,

Several hours later, Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray received a phone call. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was on the line.

“Tillerson offered his condolences for the loss of life and the devastation caused by the earthquake in Mexico and from Hurricane Katia,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. “He emphasized to Foreign Secretary Videgaray that the U.S. government stands ready to assist our neighbors in Mexico during this difficult time.”

Too bad Reich didn’t read that far.
