$40-50K is not unusual as an annual stipend for grad students, depending on field. Hard science, IT or engineering is helpful in this regard.
Just for giggles, Harvard U, somewhere on their website, if one bores down enough has a
year by year listing of under/post grads in each dept. I remember sociology going from
upwards of 1000 total to `150 or so over the 2000->2015 time frame.
