The prosecutor’s office for the state of Jalisco tweeted yesterday,
“#FGE Special Forces have captured the consular agent’s assailant, the detainee is now under the @PGR_mx’s [federal prosecutor] jurisdiction.”

Surveillance tapes show the gunman, dressed in what appears to be a dark blue male nurse’s uniform and apparently wearing a wig, waiting for the victim to come out of a shopping mall parking lot. The gunman then uses both hands to take aim and shoot the consular officer in his car before running away from the scene.
After the shooting but before the capture of the suspect, the U.S. embassy in Mexico City issued a travel warning to citizens in the Guadalajara area to “restrict their movements outside their homes and places of work to those truly essential.” The embassy urged citizens in the area “not to fall into predictable patterns” for essential movements, varying times and routes.
Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco, home of the violent and fast-growing Jalisco New Generation Cartel, but officials haven’t suggested there is a connection between the cartel and the shooting of the U.S. diplomat.
