60 indigenous Amazonian people attacked the Chinese-owned Exploracobres copper mine last week:
Ecuador Declares State of Emergency After Attack on Copper Mine. President blames ‘the usual violent ones’; indigenous groups say government responsible for clash
Two Ecuadorean indigenous organizations, however, issued a statement blaming the government for the clash, saying it was “the Ecuador’s economic future: better without Correa?product of the invasion of indigenous lands by a Chinese transnational” and accusing the government of failing “to listen, dialogue and resolve the conflicts.”
The state of emergency has not been lifted in the region.
How ridiculous to rant and rave about capitalists and wicked American oil companies despoiling the rain forest and then the socialist idiot Correa lets the Chinese in to do the same thing because he owes them money like the Venezuelan government and wants to sell oil. Don’t see any of the Hollywood crowd showing up to save the day on this one. Maybe they are too busy protesting pipelines?
“because he owes them money”
That’s the key!
The Venezuelans have attacked the Chinese merchants in Ciudad Bolivar (if you are not native you are a greedy conquistador) and the Ecuadorian indians have attacked the Chinese miners as destructive invaders. Will Chinese security troops be next? The left must be having trouble spinning this one to make it someone else’s fault. Of course they have an uncanny ability to ignore reality anyway. Did Delcy Rodriguez really say all Venezuela’s “avance y desarollo” it owes to Cuba (well true in a way if you like starving to death!)?
Chinese security troops may be a very-last-resort, but retaliation in other forms is very likely. Venezuela is deeply in debt.
