As long-time readers of this blog know, I don’t report rumors, except on rare occasions. As it is a rumor, I have no means of verifying it.
The headline today is Ryan Lochte and Other Swimmers Didn’t Report Robbery to Rio Police. Medalist denied incident at first, police launched probe only after hearing media reports (emphasis added),
Mr. Lochte, a veteran of four Olympics, and the three others said they were robbed when their taxi was “stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings,” the USOC said on Sunday.
The very persistent rumor is that the reason they did not report it was because the perpetrators were in a marked police car.
Would you be reporting the crime to the police, if that happened to you?
Again, it is a rumor, I have no means of verifying it. But it makes sense.
This would fit with the Rio police, sadly, where corruption has been rife for decades. Back in the 70s they ran death squads, and repeated rumors over the years hint they still do. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the robbers were cops.
A lot of the locals agree with you, Phineas.
