Aparecida Schunck, who was kidnapped from her home on July 22, was rescued around 6:30 p.m. local time in the city of Cotia, in Greater São Paulo, by a team of some 15 police officers, a spokesman for the anti-kidnapping division of the state police force said Sunday. Two suspects were arrested and police were still searching for other possible participants.
Additional details of the operation weren’t immediately available.
The high-profile kidnapping had underscored Brazil’s crime issues ahead of the Aug. 5 opening of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Her abductors had demanded €168 million. Much more common are mini-kidnappings, where ordinary citizens are forced to empty their accounts through ATMs.
