London riots: the shopkeepers fight back

The people who actually work for a living are fighting back the mob,
London riots: Neighbours mount anti-gang patrols amid fears of far-right agitation
Homeowners and shopkeepers took to the streets last night to protect their neighbourhoods from the gangs amid concerns far-right groups are attempting to take advantage of community tensions.

In Eltham, south east London, a crowd of 200 men gathered in the streets, promising to protect their neighbourhood from looters and arsonists following rioting in nearby Lewisham and Woolwich.
“We won’t stand for it. If anyone wants to come down here and start looting tonight, let them try – we’ll be ready for them,” said one.

“There’s not much further we can cut”?

Yes we can,

“Not much further we can cut” seems like a hanging curve ball, an open invitation for ongoing ridicule–the sort of naive assertion that might come easily to someone who had never worked in the federal government, who only realized after promoting his half-trillion-dollar public works-based stimulus plan that there was “no such thing as shovel-ready projects.” Or someone who doesn’t want to know. Or who wants to act as if he doesn’t know.

Here is the official list of federal job openings. They are still hiring. Sure, big enterprises keep hiring essential employees even in tough times. But these aren’t essential jobs. Many of them seem like the sort of job a private firm, in a financial crisis like the feds are in, would consolidate with another job or leave unfilled. (The first one that jumps out is the “Associate Administrator for Administration” at the Department of Transportation, which pays $119,554 to $179,700. It seems that this person will do administrative work to maintain the layer of bureaucracy that “coordinates” the DOTs research programs. The new hire will also give “advice and assistance in directing, coordinating, controlling” etc. this little fiefdom. You don’t have to be Peter Drucker to realize that this position does not have to exist.)

Part of the problem, of course, is that since it is virtually impossible to fire an actual underperforming federal employee, conscientious administrators have to hire new people (or consultants) to actually do the work the unfireable employees aren’t doing.

But there’s no sense, reading through this list, that the federal bureaucracy knows it is in crisis

Ace pipes in,

Let me note the dog that didn’t bark.

Have you heard any stories of older, more expensive federal employees losing their jobs during this budget crisis — as corporations typically do when they are hemorrhaging money?

Have you read any stories about departments drastically cutting back and looking for money-saving solutions — doing more with less, as they say, or “working smarter, not harder”?

Has the media been full of stories by weary bureaucrats complaining, like teachers are apparently instructed by their unions to claim, that they have to buy their own supplies to properly do their jobs?

Has there been any grousing that federal employees are missing expected pay raises and promotions, being forced to work at their old salaries through this crisis?

The answer is no.

The pivot to jobs, jobs, jobs, appears to be laser-focused on federal bureaucracy jobs. One of Kaus’s commenters points out,

Non-postal federal employment — about 10 percent of all
government employment — increased over the same period by 139,000
workers, or 6.7 percent.

London-Santiago: Coincidence or convergence?

The US media is covering the ongoing London riots, burning for the fourth consecutive night, and spreading to other parts of the country.

While London burns,

the fastest-selling items on Amazon.co.uk are batons and baseball bats, as people look to defend themselves and their property in the absence of an effective police.

while a rioter boasts, “We’re just showing the rich people that we can do what we want,” including stealing from a wounded child,

Not covered by the US media is the rioting in Chile:
Violent Protests For Education Reform In Chile

Violence has broken out in Chile’s capital as tens of thousands of students stage another protest demanding changes in public education.

Masked demonstrators are burning cars and barricades, looting storefronts and throwing furniture at police. Officers are responding with tear gas and water cannons.

ALTERNATIVE CROP OF XRC105 .- Masked demonstrators stand near a burning barricade in downtown Santiago during rioting after a students protest in Santiago, Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011. Riot police battled high school and university students in the streets of Chile's capital on Tuesday, firing water cannons and tear gas and using officers on horseback to break up flaming barricades.

While the London demonstrators are “showing the rich”, the Santiago demonstrators want private universities to provide education for free. They also want a new constitution, which of course would be subject to their approval.

It is indeed interesting that the US’s staunchest European ally, and South America’s most successful capitalist country have both come under attack following Black Thursday’s crash and the S&P downgrade.

After America may be sooner than we think.

Compare and contrast:

Obama:

“We’ve always been, and always will be, a AAA country”

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Compare and contrast that speech with what a guy on the floor of the exchange has to say:

Santelli:

“We would have been rated BBB!”

Who do you believe?

As of the writing of this post, the Dow is down 106 points, after Friday’s and Monday’s precipitous fall.

Indeed, this is A crisis of confidence in economy — and Obama

The stock market, already falling before Obama spoke, saw selling accelerate as Obama made it clear he had no new ideas to offer. And he certainly gave no hint that he’s ready to adopt Republican ideas such as cutting business taxes or slashing regulation. Instead of a pivot, Obama stayed firmly planted in the anti-growth policies of the past two-and-a-half years. He’s even keeping Tim Geithner as Treasury secretary, practically begging the poor guy to stay. (Indeed, it was almost exactly a year ago that Geithner penned his “Welcome to the Recovery” op-ed.)

Americans have seen this movie before.

And the movie is on a continuous-repeat loop.

Can we call it Black Thursday, or is that racist?

Stocks Down Over 4% in Global Sell-Off

At the close, the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index was down 60.27 points, or 4.78 percent, to 1,200.07. The Dow Jones industrial average was off 512.76 points, or 4.31 percent, to 11,383.68, and the Nasdaq was down 136.68, or 5.08 percent, to 2,556.39.

It was the biggest percentage drop since February 2009.

A crash by any other name is still the same.

What to do with an out-of-control priapic passenger?

Imagine, dear readers, that you are in the airline industry, and your most notorious passenger is, shall we say, lacking in self-restraint. He is also immensely influential, and you can not, by any stretch of the imagination, deny him the service available to any other person willing to pay for transport.

What to do, then?

Air France ordered male-only cabin crew for Strauss-Kahn

The claim was reported Thursday by Le Parisien newspaper, which also says lawyers for the former IMF chief’s alleged victim, Nafissatou Diallo, are soliciting testimony from female flight attendants at the national carrier, who may have been subjected to inappropriate behavior by the Frenchman.

The lawyers already received two accounts from disgruntled staff, along with an anonymous letter detailing the Air France male-only order, the report said.

How out-of-control are we talking about?

“Air France has a few hundred complaints from clients, employees, crew members who met the man suspected of having abused your client Madame Diallo,” the letter alleged, adding, “it was decided by Air France that ‘only male employees should be deployed in the first class cabin when this client [Strauss-Kahn] was traveling.’”

A few hundred?

Where is Tina Brown when he needs her?
