White House to Supporters: Buck Up
Vice President Joseph R. Biden was the latest to issue that advice. At a fundraiser in New Hampshire on Monday, Mr. Biden appeared exasperated with the growing belief among Democrats that they are going to suffer huge losses in November.
He told about 200 top Democratic donors that they should “remind our base constituency to stop whining and get out there and look at the alternatives. This President has done an incredible job. He’s kept his promises.”
It’s not just Plugs reading the riot act: the CIC also commanded it:
The advice by Mr. Biden followed President Obama’s own remarks from a week ago, in which he chided – in a lighthearted way – Democrats for “griping and groaning” about not having achieved exactly what they wanted on health care or financial reform or the Iraq war.
In case you think Obama & Plugs were making a passing remark, Obama reasserted to Rolling Stone that a. the glass is half full, while b. he inherited an empty glass, “in the most adverse circumstances imaginable.”
that there’s a turn of mind among Democrats and progressives where a lot of times we see the glass as half-empty. It’s like, “Well, gosh, we’ve got this historic health care legislation that we’ve been trying to get for 100 years, but it didn’t have every bell and whistle that we wanted right now, so let’s focus on what we didn’t get instead of what we got.” That self-critical element of the progressive mind is probably a healthy thing, but it can also be debilitating.
When I talk to Democrats around the country, I tell them, “Guys, wake up here. We have accomplished an incredible amount in the most adverse circumstances imaginable.”
