Sean Penn Suggests Prison Time for Journalists Who Call Hugo Chavez a Dictator
At the end of a discussion of Haiti on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, actor Sean Penn went on a rant in defense of Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, suggesting prison time for American journalists: “every day, this elected leader is called a dictator here, and we just accept it! And accept it. And this is mainstream media, who should – truly, there should be a bar by which one goes to prison for these kinds of lies.”
Human rights reports, Chavez changing the constitution repeatedly to make himself president for life, the unsavory alliances with the FARC and the ETA while plotting to kill Colombian president Alvaro Uribe, and the takeover of private industry mean nothing to Sean, who feels we don’t understand Chavez because we’re “very monocultural”:
MAHER: His image in the media is just a buffoon. You have been there. You know him. You’ve talked to him. That’s all I really know about Hugo Chavez, is what I read in the media. A dictator, took over a lot of the branches of government, wants to be president for life. What do you know that I don’t know, that I should not have such a harsh feeling about this guy?
PENN: I think that if you’re more happy with 20 percent of a population having the access to dreams, access to the feeling they have an identity and a voice. If it’s okay with the 20 percent, versus the 80 percent he gave it to, then you can criticize Hugo Chavez. You know, there are a lot of complicated issues that comes simply out of perspective. We in the United States have a difficult time putting ourselves in the shoes of what has been the history of Venezuela, the history of Latin America, and many other places. We’re very monocultural. And then we are hypnotized by the media. For example, Hugo Chavez. Who do you know here who’s gone through fourteen of the most transparent elections on the globe, and has been elected democratically, as Hugo Chavez?
Too bad Sean wasn’t around the last time students gathered to protest the closing of a TV station that dared air views contrary to the self-declared Marxist Chavez’s:
So Sean, tin-pot dictator as he is,
Chavez is a dictator
even when you’re in the bag with him.
And I would like to know how much money Chavez is providing for Sean’s NGO…

As you can hear in the show, Penn also hopes his critics die of rectal cancer.
Can we call him nuts yet?
He is a total a**. I don’t wish cancer on anyone, but I might not mind if he gets a really bad, stinky foot fungus the next time he falls out of a boat at a photo-op in New Orleans.
Not only is Sean Penn an actor, but he is dumb actor. Penn’s arguement, such as it is, is that as Chavez was elected, he can’t be a dictator. Hello Sean, Adolf Hitle and Saddam Hussien were also elected.
As a venezuelan, I would like to extend an invitation to Mr. Penn to come back to Caracas, but this time in a different way, one that is not covered up by the Chavez security staff and that leads him in the “Queen’s way”, the beautiful one, with kids going to the scarce government funding comunist schools or to the few “Comunas Projects” in which they dont’t trade with regular money but with some sort of trade of papers. Mr. Penn has visited my country in two opportunities, both lending him a hefty check on his hands that was due to be cash upon his arrival to Hollywood in order to become an outloud spoker of the Venezuelan DICTATOR. Did Mr. Penn talked about the more than 20.000 people that have been murdered in Venezuela in the past 11 years of Chavez’ regime? Did he mentioned that there are over 50 political prisoners in jails in the country who are not allowed to see the sun or talk to their families? Did he talked about the closing of Venezuela’s oldest free TV channel (RCTV)? Did he informed the US public that the Venezuelan hospitals run without prepared medical personnel because there aren’t venezuelan doctors around? Did he suffered not having electricity or water in his VIP hotel like it does happen in every single corner of this corrupted country? Did he say that high venezuelan government personnel are not restricted to get dollars at the official change rate of 2,30Bs and the general public has to undergo a 3 day procedure to get only a $1000 once a year or go to the black market and change for the rate of 7,00Bs a $? Does he know those 14 “democratic” elections were full of tricks made by the chavez people? DOES HE KNOW THAT HUGO CHAVEZ APLAUDS THE SEPTEMBER 11TH KILLINGS IN THW WTC?? Please Mr. Penn, take your stuff to another place, we Venezuelans are full with ours and do not need a dying actor to come give us lectures about life, politics or economy; his incapacity to understand the venezuelan history is truly demonstrated in that interview. My advice: SHUT UP AND READ MORE ABOUT VENEZUELA, and one last thing “VENEZUELA IS NOT CHAVEZ”.
Bring the snot nosed prick to me and I will make him suffer. Penn, you read this, come on little boy and meet your challenge, me. Fucking wanna be little nasty kraut.
The United States is monocultural? Chavez is not a dictator? Anyone who disagrees with him should go to jail? Oof. I think Sean Penn should stick to acting since he so consistently fails with reality.
