The Economist asks,
Government policy documents suggest that Mr Chávez’s aim is to stir up troubles for the United States in many places at once, eventually bringing about the collapse of what he calls “the empire”. Most of the regimes he is cultivating in this enterprise are marked by rigged elections, media censorship, the criminalisation of dissent and leaders for life. Is that the future of Venezuela?
The future?
More like the present.
I remember when Cuba tried the same tactic and all they got out of it was AIDS!
Pat, do you remember when Fidel blamed a dengue fever epidemic on the CIA? Of course, the 50,000 Cuban soldiers returning from “internationalist duty” in Angola and other places in Africa had NOTHING to do with the dengue fever epidemic.
For the first time in her life Michelle Obama is proud of her country and I’m beginning to see why.
When presented with a very earnest, promising, although somewhat glib, mental defective we didn’t enroll him in one of those “hire the handicapped” programs. We made him President.
Shazaam!
Chavez’s aim is to build a strong democratic, just equitable society that is not controlled by outside forces – be they from the north (USA), or the west (Colombia).
You’re right on that, Luke. He’d rather have the East – Russia and Iran.
Luke Weyland is an Aussie PSF who occasionally comments but doesn’t reply. Since he doesn’t know what he he talking about, that is a sensible policy.
I recall one time Luke was talking about all the good things Thugo had done, such as “subsidized housing.”
That was a real howler, since under 10 years of Chavismo, housing construction per capita from 1999-2008 is less than half of what it was from 1989-1998.
But what do the facts matter to a PSF?

As per Gringo I followed his, Luke Weyland’s, spoor around the internet and basically came to the same conclusion. One comment, no response and usually a comment so lacking in facts that they don’t pass the laugh test. What is it about Australian socialists that makes them all sound like fifteen-year old boys reading Regis DeBray while listening to either Billy Bragg or Midnight Oil, for the first time in their lives?
Plus I wish he would learn how to spell cheap!
