Yawns greet the potentates of autumn: Gaddafi, Chavez, Mugabe, Ahmadinijad . . .
Politically high profile dictators and demagogues visiting the UN session besides Gaddafi and Ahmadinijad include Presidents Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, his sidekick Evo Morales of Bolivia, and Zimbabwe’s Comrade Robert Mugabe.
Back bench delegates speaking later in the week include the Foreign Ministers of Belarus, Cuba, and the Burmese military junta.
Charmed, I’m sure.
The Obama administration continues its foreign policy path,
Despite this cast of unsavory characters being allowed to into New York to address the UN Assembly, the U.S. State Department sided with left-wing Latin American states, and has venally blocked the visa of Honduran President Roberto Miceletti from visiting New York, over concerns that he was not legitimately elected! Honduras, a long time American ally, has been crudely shunned.
Zelaya, as you know, had announced last week that he was heading to the UN but decided instead to hole up at the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. He’s getting plenty of media attention complaining that there is no electricity, food, or water for him or for the 300 people he brought along.
Pause here for a moment and explain to me how 300 people slipped unnoticed into an embassy. But I digress.
In New York, Lula had time to call the embassy from New York, and asked Zelaya not to provide a pretext for coup leaders to invade the Brazilian embassy. Don’t give him any ideas, Lula.
While all this is going on, not only are the Russians rearming the Cuban military, now Venezuela is opening on Thursday a “peace base” in Havana.
And, yes
The photo shows Pres. Obama and his TOTUS addressing the UN Assembly on global warming. As expected, we blame ourselves for a crisis that may or may not exist.
It’s clear, as you can see from the picture, what it is that this UN meeting is suffering from a severe shortage of….
This and nothing else will do.
it seems some like Fausta choose to define “dictatorship” according to the degree it disobeys the dictates of Washington.
Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Qatar, are apparently models of modern democracy – because they do as they are told. Too bad that all of these, save Saudi Arabia are absolute dectatorship – and Egypt’s democracy is a sham. Whereas Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador all have truly popularly elected leaders, with highly critical media and where the opposition run states, cities, and organise rallies and other demonstrations. These states are socialist – they are thus dictatorships in the eyes of the US right.
My dear friend from Down Under..Just because a leader is popularly elected does not make for a democracy.
Luke,
Find one single instance in this blog where I have said anything in favor of the oppressive and dictatorial governments of “Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Qatar.”
And, by the way, the US government is on the wrong track in Honduras.
