In other Latin American news: Honduras interim gov’t: OAS mission won’t be fair
Honduras’ coup-installed government said it does not expect to be judged fairly by an international panel that arrived Monday to investigate allegations of human rights abuses.
The visit by Inter-American Commission of Human Rights monitors comes a week after the interim government charged 24 supporters of ousted President Manuel Zelaya with sedition in an intensifying crackdown on protests that have sometimes turned violent.
Interim Deputy Foreign Minister Martha Alvarado said the government expects a biased assessment from the panel because it is a branch of the Organization of American States, which has condemned the June 28 coup and is demanding Zelaya’s reinstatement.
“We must be very careful not to have great expectation of their reports,” Alvarado said at a news conference. “We have great reservations.”
The monitors met Monday with members of the Supreme Court and will spend a week meeting with other officials and civic organizations. The OAS also plans to send a delegation of foreign ministers from Western Hemisphere countries later this week in a bid to revive negotiations to end the crisis.
You didn’t mention that the IACHR refuses to meet with Micheletti and the interim government because it doesn’t recognise the government. Therefore the IACHR report by definition will be one-sided.
I retired to Honduras over 14 years ago.
I was thankful when Zelaya was expelled; to be honest, things were moving left so fast before June 28 that I thought we’d be Socialist before now.
My immediate thought was that most of the world would support…applaud our gutsy, and well executed move. Alas, NO. Total non-support.
Well the Hondurans are proud, and stand tall. Only about 8% here support Zelaya’s return. Seems the world has gone bananas. I stand tall with Honduras. The Gringos can go to H***. Maybe, or maybe not, they’ll understand some day.

Safariman, I can understand how you feel but don’t be too hasty in condemning all of us “gringos” to the pit. It is the leftist in government and their lackeys in the media and press that distorted the truth about what was actually happening in your country. I have let my political representatives know they are wrong to back a minion of Hugo Chavez. Obama’s biggest supporters the socialist and unions like SEIU provide a direct pipeline of information from Chavez to the White House.
I am only one of millions of “gringos” who support your countries right to enforce the rule of law, the basis of any free society.
