‘Padre Oprah’ Joins Episcopal Church

A popular Miami priest and media personality known as ”Father Oprah” has left the Catholic Church and joined the Episcopal Church after he was photographed cavorting on the beach with his girlfriend.

The Rev. Alberto Cutie (KOO’-tee-ay) was removed from his Miami Beach church after photos of him kissing and embracing a woman appeared in the pages of a Spanish-language magazine earlier this month.

He was received into Episcopal Church in a ceremony Thursday at Trinity Cathedral and may later announce he will marry his girlfriend, which is allowed in that denomination. He must complete other requirements before serving as an Episcopal priest.

Cutié joins Episcopal church, will marry

The Rev. Alberto Cutié, the celebrity priest removed from his Miami Beach church after photos of him kissing and embracing a woman appeared in the pages of a Spanish-language magazine earlier this month, has left the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami to join the Episcopal church and announced that he will marry the woman he has dated for two years.

Joining him in becoming an Episcopalian was the woman in the photos, Ruhama Buni Canellis, 35.

The small, private ceremony happened at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Cathedral, the church’s South Florida headquarters in downtown Miami.

Cutié, dressed in a white dress shirt, a black jacket and black dress pants, sat smiling beside his fiancé during the half-hour ceremony. Priests and deacons from the Episcopal church were by his side — many notably accompanied by their wives.

Bishop Leo Frade, head of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida, officiated as Cutié and Canellis knelt in front of the bishop and were received into the Episcopal church.

The bishop also gave Cutié special status as a lay minister, meaning he can preach in Episcopal churches but not celebrate the Eucharist, the symbolic body and blood of Christ.

Cutie will give his first sermon as an Episcopalian 10 a.m. Sunday at the Church of The Resurrection in Biscayne Park. It will take Cutié at least a year to be certified as an Episcopal priest.

I expect that will be a full church.

Noticias 24 and El Herald have the story in Spanish.

Perfect, fleeing a church with too many of those icky old rules to one remarkably free of rules and beliefs for that matter. Maybe he has promised to be fruitful and multiply as the demographics of the Episcopaleans looks something like the sales chart of GM.

Plus it seems to me that our erstwhile Episcopalian shouldn’t appear anywhere in public where his hands can’t be seen at all times.

Sad, so sad. You can google and find his videos and hear him to be faithful to the Catholic church. He could have done this before the scandal. From now, I will pray for the Catholic priests, there is one in my family, he is as handsome has ex priest Cutie. Sad…so sad….

Now he will be lying to the Episcopalians too, maybe he thinks that changing denominations is like changing clothe? if was not found the way they did he will still be lying to the Catholics and to the world,
He bielives until yesterday that Jesus is present in the Eucharisty, body, soul and divinity but Episcopalians biliev is only a symbol, what is going to do about that now? is he going to lie obout it too? What I think is a hipopcrit that do not want to be off being the center, is goo to let now that I am not active Catholic at the moment for personal reasons. Episcoplaians open your eyes!!!!!!!

I am deeply disappointed on Padre Alberto. The way this has played out for means of communication simply for money and publicity. As a practicing Catholic saddens to see him leave, but I wish him the best of luck in the Episcopalian church. Our God is the same, weather Catholic or Episcopalian, and he is good. So, as long as you are good person is all that matters. Good to you and your future wife.

Fausta – the more orthodox Episcopalians are utterly mortified by this. It seems as if the TEC bishop believes that tons of Catholics will cross over with Father Cutie.

Garrobo – everyone has the right and indeed the duty to follow or leave their faith under their convictions. It is, however, just plain embarrassing to both churches to have a media mogul just blip like this from one church to another as a result of a scandal and being sidelined for discipline.

The appearance is that Father Cutie did not take his status as a priest or the Roman Catholic faith very seriously. It also appears as if the Episcopalian who just slapped the mantle of preacher on him does not care about Father Cutie’s spiritual welfare, but about his ability to draw people into the decimated Episcopalian church.

The Episcopalians are the ones with the red face here.

I heard it on good authority that the first picture in the post has been photoshopped to remove the gang signs being flashed by the homies from the Episcopalian church. There is absolutely no truth to the rumor though that Padre Alberto had to go through a “beat down” or do a drive by to shout out the text of the Act of Supremacy. But it is true that Ruhama was seen shopping for large hoop earrings and looking at various fonts for her “Me Vida Loca,” tat.

My mother and I had an encounter with Father Alberto eight years ago when we consulted him regarding the baptism of my grand-daughter who lives out of town. At that time he was already supposedly in a relation-ship with this lady. He forced all the rules on us and literally told us it was impossible to perform the baptism in Miami. My mother (80 at the time), concerned at the time over one of her granddaughters asked for his help. He dismissed her in a very ROUGH,INPOLITE, UNCOURTEOUS,FORCEFUL manner which surprised and hurt my mother very much. There was no sign of any humanity or interest in the community’s parishioners then and I believe there is none now.

Alberto, he does not deserve the title of Father, is a disrespectful, arrogant, opportunistic individual, who has used his priesthood for his own advancing means. He has used the priesthood to get famous, to be part of the Miami society. I honestly believe that he does not care about anyone but HIMSELF.

No one is saying he should not be in love or marry the lady. He should have been truthful and NOT violated the vows that he says he has honored. HE IS ONLY THINKING OF HIMSELF. The proof is in the pudding, when things got tough, he took the easiest way out. He joked and talked about himself in the sermon. Church is to be repentful and talk about the teachings of God, not get notoriety and use the pulpit for your own advancement. He does not leave the church because as a normal individual, NO ONE would pay attention to him and he would not be able to afford all the luxuries and popularity he now enjoys as a priest. MARK MY WORDS, he will sign a book and movie deal and make lots of money on this scandal. Once again, proving that all he is interested in is money and fame.

I can understand his dilema. Honestlt people, read the Bible. Show me where God or Jesus say you can not marry, that you have to go through a “middle man’ for confession or any of the million rules the Catholics put on their followers. I choose to live by God’s standards. By Jesus’ standardss and to fault another human being for doing the same is ridiculous. I don’t care that he is a preist or not. The Catholic church put so many rules in place to get more money, not for God, not for Jesus, but for themsleves. He is not doing anything Jesus didn’t do himself. If God didn’t want man and woman to be together for love, procreation and survival of mankind, can someone please explain to me Adam and Eve?

Episcopalians do NOT believe the Eucharist to be a symbol, but we believe in the real presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Episcopal Priest explicitely state in the eucharistic liturgy, when inviting people to receive our Lord: “Christ our passover is sacrificed for us, so let us keep the feast”.

Also, in most Episcopal churches, respect for the Eucharist is expressed by kneeling to receive the Lord Jesus Christ, whereas Roman Catholics have abolished that.

Yes. We Episcopalians believe the Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ and a sacrament…not just a “Symbol”
I don’t know where Roman Catholic’s get their info on the Episcopal Church. We are Catholic and Apostolic.
    There are 3 basic differences.
    1. The Pope is the head of the RC’s not us.
    2. Priest and marry (how healthy is that?) Roman Catholics married until 325 A.S. Then they changed the church changed the law. St. Peter was married.

    3. In the last 32 years women are also ordained as priest. Considering women were some of the first ministers in the church, then one of the pope’s branded Mary Magdalene a prostitute…how kind.

The only thing I can say is this, let’s keep the train of thought and the order of the scenario, don’t take it out of content, it’s not about Religion, Beliefs, nor God. It’s about what he agreed from the very beginning. We are not questioning whether he loves God or not. Nor if he did good things or not. Whether he is a male with pants from the moment he became a priest of if he isn’t. And most certainly it’s not even about the love he has for this woman. It’s about the honesty, in facing what he knew was wrong, because he himself said…”I’ve been battling with myself and these feelings for a long time, why? Because deep down within his heart he knew he did make a promise and that he is the only one who will know that the consequence was this and instead of facing all he preferred getting caught and just deal with the plans he had “if caught”…..like russian roulette, if it happens it happens and if it doesn’t then oh well, you’re lucky and he was for a long time. Let’s see the order of events:

    1) He accepted the vows of the Catholic Faith, without any pressure
    2) He used his talent to lure the parishioners close to God.
    3) He preached well and did his job as a priest.
    4) Fell in love with a parishioner (Catholic herself? How did she make that change to the Episcopalian Church so abruptly)
    5) He continued preaching and not practicing what he was preaching.
    6) Began to realize that what he had accepted was not working for him, and needed to do the right thing.
    7) The love grew stronger for her (not for God, God is Love but not in this sense….let’s keep it real here).
    8) Battled with himself about the way he would deal with this situation (because it is not a problem, but with his detention of bringing out the truth, created more tension within himself)
    9) Continued his relationship because he knew it’s not wrong, never stopped to say I am not doing the right thing for what I have promised.
    10) Started getting close to facing the community but preferred to get caught.
    11) Planned to get caught, and forget everyone.
    12) Used his intelligence, Charisma, and public figure (which was formed in the Catholic Church)to make the change but in a way to make it seem that the Catholic Church is the blame. Instead of thanking them for his “persona”
    13) Deep down within his heart, he knows that what he did is not wrong, but the reality of this was the fact that he disrespected the church the promise and the Word of God by without shame using it to justify his broken promis……..what a shame.

My mom taught us to face the riot, when you know you roused it up. What a shame and to think that I am a Catholic and firm believer that it is okay to marry but we also need to know that remember the “perception” of the church and the reasons to why the discipline is needed, avoiding marriage, will help the concentration. And yes they did marry before in the old testament but remember, the men went out with the Word of God and respected the family and man. This couple did not respect the fact that he was a priest in the Catholic Church and the rules need to be respected for God and for his promise to the church. If I were to be an Episcopalian, I would most definitely not trust this man and would be upset to see that he just converted and is being received as a hero, but just to get back at our Faith, what a shame and shame on your religious people who throw it at us, God will forgive you for judging our faith.

This world lacks discipline and no respect exist and is full of disrespectful people like this so called “New Episcopalian Priest”.
