Generally speaking, American DVDs do not work in Britain, as those smart-alecs in the White House or the State Department should have realized. Everyone else knows. Or did they assume that the Browns have those superduper, all regions DVD players?
Anyone who has ever traveled knows that about foreign DVD zones. I thought Obama was supposed to be so – multi-culti.
Don’t the Obamas have a social secretary? Perhaps they should give him/her a call..

Ironic, the son of a foreigner who spent part of his childhood abroad has shown himself to be a complete doofus with regard to interacting with the furriners. Or, he appointed doofus staff who selected the “gift.”

I rise, slightly, in defense of the WH to mention that many people watch DVDs on their computers. All regional codes can be viewed there! But its more likely we are viewing the result of staff that thinks VHS is shorthand for the battle flags Nelson raised at Trafalgar.
Speaking from experience I’d say that American DVDs do not work in Britain on computers either. It is possible to switch laptops back and forth but that is tricky and may result in real problems. Sorry, Pat P. but that’s the way it is.

Are you kidding me? American DVDs don’t work in most other countries, this is basic knowledge. I thought our president was such a huge internationalist…?
@Helen: Agreed! I sent a friend in London some DVDs from here and once she configured her laptop to allow her to watch American DVDs, she could no longer watch European ones. Could it be, though, that our illustrious president thought that because of our “special relationship” (which he’s all but destroyed) with Britain, that the DVDs would work?
Ace always has a way with words. 🙂

@Gringo:
Good point! Part of his sales pitch was that he had a more sophisticated understanding of the world around us.
Can we have Bush and his naivete back, please?
