Will the Obama presidency amount to the third Clinton administration?
In today’s Guardian,
Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned.
Here’s one theory on this: When the deal was made to make Obama president, the Clinton camp OK’d it as long as they would be the ones filling the jobs in the administration. Hillary might have held out until the very last, but once at the Convention, she was made part of the deal.
Was she told specifically about the Secretary of State job? Or was it a little more discreet, more sub rosa? After all, Bill’s waaay in bed with the Saudi royal family, the king of Morocco, and the governments of Kuwait and Qatar, and Lord knows who else is backing his William J. Clinton Foundation and his presidential library.
The offer must have been implied, not overtly stated.
Just one theory, folks: the Left got their president, and the Clintons got their administration back in power.
Jeff, on the other hand, ponders,
So the question is: can he use the appointment of Hillary Clinton to justify to his base a bit more muscularity than he promised during election season? Or will she simply be serving at his behest?
Going by the record, one would say that the Clintons only serve their own agenda. But we’ll see.
I’m still trying to figure out what’s in it for her*. She gives up her independent base in the Senate for what, to be Obama’s hireling at State? If things turn out as rough for The One as I expect, I would think she’d want to run an insurgent candidacy from the Senate, not the Cabinet of the guy she wants to replace.
*(Bill, of course, gets access to the State interns.)
Hmmm… The Secretary of State is fourth in line to the Presidency, and I’ve always pictured her as Lady Macbeth… }:>
I still have my doubts but I can possibly see this occuring if not mainly to get even with Bill Richardson. But then that raises the possibility of Andrew Cuomo as the interim senator from New York. Now that is disturbing!
