Jeanne Kirkpatrick’s article (PDF file) How The PLO Was Legitimized, is a relevant today as it was in 1989. Jeremayakovka sent it, and also this article, Life with Jeane: Remembering “Kirkpatski”
Jeane told me once that as a young woman she hadn’t expected to marry, so dedicated was she to the life of the mind. As a little girl, she spent one of her first dollars on a thesaurus. “So what happened,” I asked. “You fell in love?” She put it differently: “Kirk fell in love with me.”

Kirkpatrick was America’s first U.N. ambassador to enjoy Cabinet-level status; indeed, no woman had ever sat so high up in the White House power structure.
She used that heft to push for aggressive engagement with the foundering Soviet Union – refusing, like Reagan, to accept the conventional wisdom of the “experts” that communism could not be defeated, only contained.
Kirkpatrick pressed for strong U.S. backing for the contras in Nicaragua, arguing that America could no longer afford to be inhibited by post-Vietnam indecision and weakness. She made clear, privately and in public, that she would not tolerate “malicious attacks upon the good name of the United States.”
Kirkpatrick’s strength was that she could make her case as eloquently to the common folk as in the language of the intellectuals.
The more I read about JK, the more I like her.
Syria’s WMD stuff
A Jacksonian takes a look at the photos.
Sigmund, Carl and Alfred sent more on the subject:
Guile, Gas and Germs: Syria’s Ultimate Weapons
Chemical Weapons
Syria: Weapons of Mass Destruction Capabilities and Programs
This is truly horrifying stuff.
What we need is another Jean Kirkpatrick.
The Sanity Squad and the Fatuous Baker Boys
Neo-Neocon: The ISG and the USIP: who are these people and why are they saying all these things?
But these picks are beyond my understanding. If you follow the links and read the biographies, you’ll see that Jordan, O’Connor, Meese, Panetta, and probably Simpson (who seems to have a bit of experience with veteran affairs, which is probably not all that relevant to policy in Iraq) have no experience whatsoever in the relevant fields. None. Period.
This is truly hard to fathom.
Shrinkwrapped: Applied Diplomatic Narcissism
Sigmund, Carl and Alfred: The Technology Of Terror, Untenable Positions And Apologies – this post promises a follow-up.
and last, but not least, Dr. Sanity’s SHAME, HONOR, AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE BAKER-HAMILTON REPORT
The Captain wonders how many more victories we want to hand the mullahs; and it is essential that we understand the fundamental psychology at play, otherwise we will continue to do exactly that. We are talking about a shame culture here, and Baker-Hamilton have just elevated the international status of the barbaric, totalitarian thugs who run Iran and their psychotic president by acknowledging that they are our “equal”–even suggesting that they are superior in that they can assist us out of a difficult situation.
I can’t wait for the Squad’s next podcast.
Not Just the Veil – New Islamic Fashions
So let’s be honest, this is not a modesty issue – it’s how Islam views women that promotes violence and rape against women
Louisiana Conservative interviewed GM Roper of GM’s Corner.
LC: It does seem kind of odd that we call ourselves the ‘home of the brave’ while we act so scared of everything.
GMR: I’m not sure if it is scared of, or an unwillingness to “offend” others. It is almost like political correctness is an ally of islamofascism. For example, the 6 imams that were taken off the plane a week or so ago. They castigated us for not “understanding” but the reality is that we did understand their actions, they didn’t want to be passengers, they wanted to cause a scene.
