Looting, death in Argentine police strike

A police strike for higher pay — which the governor blamed on his closure of brothels that provide a money stream to corrupt officers — has prompted waves of looting and robberies in Argentina’s second largest city.

The violence in Cordoba began Tuesday night and continued Wednesday morning, with storefronts being shattered, mobs stealing merchandise, robbers attacking people in the streets and vigilantes arming themselves to protect their homes. More supermarkets and a mobile television van recording the violence were attacked this morning, even as officers and provincial authorities began negotiations to end the strike.

Hospital authorities reported one shooting death and more than 100 injuries, mostly from shattered glass.

[Gov. Jose Manuel] de la Sota also described the strike as a police response to his decision to close 140 brothels that provide income to corrupt officers. “We know that this, which is a terrible business, horrible, is linked to drug trafficking and that it would bring us problems sooner or later,” the governor said.

The new police salaries are the equivalent of about US$1,400/month at the black market rate. This is a 52% increase over their prior salary.

RT reports that the police union has agreed on the new salary,

Cry me a river: Michelle Antoinette in Spain to be with grieving friend

Monday, August 9th, 2010

This looks like something out of one of Ace’s headlines,
Why Michelle Obama Vacationed in Spain: To Be With Grieving Friend, Fly AF2, Visit the Cordoba Mosque, and Hang Out With Royalty.

OK, so I made up the last part.

You can watch part of the grieving process in this video I posted the other day,

Lynn Sweet, however, spins like a top on meth:

Michelle Obama returned to Washington on Sunday from five days on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, taking a mother-daughter trip with Sasha, 9, that stirred controversy. A White House source told me, however, that Mrs. Obama traveled to Spain to help a grieving friend deal with the death of her father.

Later in the article, Sweet (!) explains,

A White House source told me the Mrs. Obama was not able to attend the funeral for Blanchard’s father at the beginning of July.

What Sweet doesn’t remember is that Michelle was vacationing at Camp David at about that time. Of course that must have been part of the grieving process.

Now that Sweet’s cleared that one for us, I can’t wait for Sweet to explain the absence of high administration officials at the Colombian presidential inauguration last Saturday.

Speaking of Ace, he’s got the Top Ten Activities To Honor Friend’s Departed Father At Michelle Obama’s Five-Star Funeral Jam

10. Barbecued shrimp slightly al dente out of respect for the dead

9. When snorkeling, bereavers hold their heads upside-down so brilliantly-colored coral fish appear to be wearing sad face frowns instead of happy face smiles

8. Commemorative Jet-Skiing

7. Morning’s mani-pedi group outing begun by reading of appropriate Psalm, and then reading of a random cartoon from Marmaduke: The Classics, because you can’t start your day off too heavy on the Spanish Riviera

6. Extreme zip-line excursion reminds everyone that life is fleeting

5. Resort’s specialty drink? The “Mortal Coil Monsoon”

4. Waiters and bartenders only tipped 7% to remind them that there are things more important than money

3. Bereavement Para-sailing

2. Booze Cruise’s Martini-and-crossed-swords flag lowered to half mast

And the number one activity to honor the dead at Michelle Obama’s five-star funeral jam…

1. Moment of silence strictly observed after each Bama Slamma shot

Bonus! Number 0.

0. Every day after the spa, Michelle flexes her biceps and announces she’s giving Father Blanchard a “two-gun salute”

Oh, and in case you hear people tell you, “well, Laura Bush went on an African safari”, William Jacobson points out, “Très chic, those aluminum smelters and huts doused in DDT.

Because nothing says “healing” like an international media circus with dozens of Secret Service agents, policeman and reporters around.

Of Mosques and Men: Reflections on the Ground Zero Mosque

Scott Johnson summarizes what’s Behind the mosque at Ground Zero. Go read Stephen Schwartz’s detailed report, A Mosque Grows Near Brooklyn
The dubious financing of ‘Cordoba House’ deserves scrutiny

So far, then, the Ground Zero Islamic facility rests on a support network linked to the anti-Jewish Mahathir and the Perdana-supported Gaza raiders, some notable servants of the Iranian clerical dictatorship, and an Egyptian property developer associated with the pro-Hamas chief of the Arab League.

But the questionable aspects of the Ground Zero Islamic project do not end there. Feisal Abdul Rauf’s wife, Daisy Khan, executive director of ASMA, has been one of the most assiduous promoters of the lower Manhattan mega-mosque. She spoke on July 6 to the Chautauqua Institution, celebrating the double heritage she claims: “The first, the American faith-based social activism, a legacy that included the abolitionists, women’s suffrage movement, and the civil rights movement. Second, I have inherited the tradition of my faith, a faith that has inspired positive social change for over 1,400 years.”

Rauf’s wife failed to mention another feature of her background: She is the niece of Dr. Farooq Khan, formerly a leader of the Westbury Mosque on Long Island, which is a center for Islamic radicals and links on its website to the paramilitary Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), the front on American soil for the Pakistani jihadist Jamaat e-Islami.

Say “No” to the mosque.
