The Gap: “Vote twice”?

Several people (myself included) have noticed the “Vote Twice” buttons at The Gap displays.

Vote Twice?

My friend Allyson noticed, too, and decided to write The Gap. Here’s her letter:

To the Board of Directors of Gap, and Officers of the Company,

I have been a loyal customer of GAP since it first opened. I have seen the many changes both design wise, and artistically and I have always been inspired by the concerns for AIDS and other projects like the Whitney artist items that have brought art into daily life. However, as a consumer and activist, I was shocked by one of the buttons you are promoting in your “VOTE” campaign.

I was in your shop in Walnut Creek this weekend, and purchased a button that says “VOTE TWICE”. I was perplexed by this statement, as it is illegal for any citizen to vote twice and seeing the GAP encourage voter fraud was shocking. I bought the button as evidence, and kept the receipt as I am still outraged that your company is selling this propaganda to a group of voters, many who have registered for the first time. I also complained to the sales girl who said I was not the first person to say that this was a very innappropiate message and that she did not have a proper response from corporate regarding this controversial button.

Is this the type of message you want to go to our voters, youth, and new immigrants who are learning what America is, how our voting laws work and what our laws represent?

I think this button should be pulled, and a full page advertisment in newspapers, and on your official website saying that this is indeed not the intent of GAP to encourage voter fraud.

I will no longer shop at GAP, Old Navy, Banana Republic, or PIPERLIME again until I understand why this message was supported by the GAP, as this will only encourage your design team to continue to spew hatred of our legal system and create permission to do something illegal.

This letter will go to media, as well as my email list encouraging many others to complain and stop supporting GAP, either by selling their shares, or not spending our money at your establisment.

I look forward to a prompt response on your positon regarding “VOTE TWICE” buttons.

Thank you

[...] Stop doing this. I’ll give you that its funny, but lets be serious for a moment. People in this country can’t order off the McDonalds menu without helpful and suggestive advertising. They can’t register to vote without the help of MTV. They wouldn’t know what the hell to do if someone took away Google, and God forbid they have to read the rules on anything, if the rules happen to be more than four paragraphs long and without pictures. Which is why, if you’re going to suggest it, they’re going to do it, and we’re going to hold you responsible. [...]

It is possible to seek a federal injunction against the Gap , and if any voter fraud is proven in areas where these buttons are availabel is found after the polling to implicate them along with ACORN in a scheme to conspire for voter fraud under RICO , after all it’s their advertising , and this is America where lawyers and courts are more than willing to see just how deep the pockets go in all the Jeans at the Gap

Looking at the press release titled “F J BENJAMIN EXTENDS RELATIONSHIP WITH GAP INC. TO INDONESIA” The Gap uses the following email address schematic:

Using their Board of Directors list you should then have each person’s email if someone wanted to do an email campaign instead of calling a phone number.

Is this a trick or a treat?
Is the GAP now part of ACORN promoting illegal efforts to “CHANGE” the USA to the USSA (United Soviet States of America)?
I will boycot the GAP and all of its’ subsidiaries –and petition others to do the same (including honest democrats)!
This election is not about a preview of a new reality show, or an SNL skit or an advertising gimmick! Very simply stated, it is about keeping your freedom or giving it away (to the government). This is your life (and our children’s future) WAKE UP AMERICA!

  16. Beverly Lynn Says:

A note to where those buttons came from, I found this little tidbit buried in an article about John Waters.

“At 62, Waters seemed at ease in the transition. He likes being affluent, and becoming the kind of icon of pop culture who is asked to participate in a promotional campaign by a hip clothing chain. (Gap asked artists to come up with ideas to get out the vote, and John Waters’ contribution is a star-spangled red-white-and-blue campaign button that reads, “Vote Twice.”) ”

  22. IDONTCARE Says:

I think the button is funny and I’d wear one. I’m sure somewhere the GAP is happy for the extra attention and laughing and those who take it this seriously. It’s obviously tongue in cheek.

  23. Kiril, The Mad Macedonian Says:

  25. J.D. Says:

…I think it’s suppose to mean vote once in the primary, and vote again for president. You know, the whole election thing takes two votes?..

I take it as more of a “participate in the whole election” instead of sitting at home till Nov. 2nd and just voting for who bothered you less.

  26. spiderbucket Says:

Relax, please. It’s a joke and far less offensive than most any of the comments the stooges post here or Michelle Malkin’s site.

  27. Sweet Says:

I’m not sure what is funnier, the letter by the original person, or the reactions. It is funny. I challenge you to find one person who voted twice because of a button. At first I thought the commenters were kidding with this outrage… turns out I was wrong. I encourage you to send letters to GAP… bet it will keep the fellas over to GAP laughing.

  28. Otis Says:

Think for a moment. College student registers to vote when home last summer. Student attends college in neighboring state, registers to vote there too. Student requests absentee ballot from home and votes. Student vote also on campus.

Can anyone explain to me how this could not happen? Does anyone know of any federal registration network which cross checks voter registration rolls in the other 49 states?

Vote twice – is it really so far-fetched?

I wonder if the early voters are going to try to vote again on Nov 4th?

There are many things that suck about this campaign – one of them being a free application on my i-phone that links you into the Obama campaign to help get out the vote!

I despised the i-phone before I despised it for this free application!

  34. Devon Says:

It’s satire you ignorant fools. it’s a reflection of the mockery we’ve made out of our democracy. Who the hell in their right mind would think that one could actually vote twice. I would love to hear John Waters’ stand on this (he designed the button.) I own this pin, i love it! people passing me in the streets love it. even if you don’t get the satire it still makes people stop and wonder.
It’s a travesty that this item was pulled. but what a great collectors item you’ve made for me!

  35. JAO... Says:

first of all this button was produced before the ACORN scandal and has nothing to do with it…if anyone did their homework or were the least bit knowledgeable in art or pop culture would know that the designer of this button is John Waters, director of such cult classics as Pink Flamingos and Serial Mom…

it is all tongue in cheek, all done to make the public aware of the importance of voting!!!…AND only an idiot knows that those registered to vote can only do it once, but hell i guess that America truly is a nation of uneducated idiots considering who is currently running things…

  36. Anthony (Los Angeles) Says:

“Who the hell in their right mind would think that one could actually vote twice. “

Ummm… All those “graveyard Democrats” in Chicago* who gave Kennedy part of his margin of victory in 1960?

    *(What a coincidence….)

Get a life you dip shi ts. You f’ing conservative brain washed bigots never have been able to understand sarcasm have you? Best wishes on the 4th!

    Get a life… it’s just a button…. find a new cause.

  40. BP Says:

…and I guess you’ve never laughed at a joke about Chicago and voting twice/deceased voting…now that I think about it, you probably don’t have a sense of humor so you probably have never laughed. It was a joke and I trust our system to minimize the efforts of anyone wanting to vote twice. For too many, getting to vote once has enough obstacles!

  41. M. R. Kirk Says:

John Waters has been saying “vote twice” for years, ive even heard him say it in person. I do understand the controversy but if somebody actually gets in a second vote its his/her concious that can take it. Also… would anybody know where to find a “vote twice” button? Im a HUGE John Waters fan and would love to have this for my collection. Thanks tons.
