Edward Woodward

EdwardWoodward

Actor Edward Woodward has died of pneumonia. Big Hollywood has a nice obituary.

He’s probably best remembered for playing the title character in The Equalizer, a deeply moral TV show about a middle-aged guy who packed heat and kicked butt in pre-Giuilani era New York City. The Washington Post calls Woodward,

an urbane and versatile British stage actor who specialized in playing introspective men of conscience

The photo shows him in full Equalizer gear: The impeccable suit (tie with matching pocket scarf, as it was the style back then), lapel pins and ring which established his background, and of course, firearm at the ready.

However, if you haven’t seen the Australian film Breaker Morant, you should. Woodward’s performance was absolutely breathtaking.

I’ve seen lots of movies, and I concur with you about Woodward in general, he was an excellent actor.

I personally found Breaker Morant to be rather slow to the point of boredom. Perhaps I just wasn’t in the mood, or something (it’s one of very few movies I never managed to sit through the entirety of, and that includes some real celluloid travesties — but I last watched it more than 20 years ago, when it was out in theaters or recently out on video, so perhaps my impression would change).

Primarily, I offer this observation just as a heads up — be in the mood for a slow moving picture, with a lot of talking heads, more so than expect anything of action in it, IIRC. Don’t take my opinion of it as necessarily worth a lot beyond that. It’s not a fast-paced film.

So sad. I have always loved Woodward, both as The Equalizer and in Breaker Morant. I thought the movie was brilliant. No, it wasn’t a big action picture, but his performance was exquisite.

To this day the Australians get weepy when watching Breaker Morant but they will always complain at the end that Jack Thompson should have been Breaker Morant instead of that poncy Englishman, Edward Woodward. A little bit of trivia is that many of the crew, producers and writers on The Equlizer ended up working on Law and Order and that the two co-stars of the program, Keith Szaubajika and Mark Margolis, have had steady work on that program for almost twenty years.
