Venezuela: Refinery explosion

At 1:11AM local time, due to a gas leak, Explosion at Venezuela Refinery Kills 19

In recent years, Amuay, along with other major refineries in Venezuela, have experienced chronic operational delays due to accidents and mishaps. Critics say that poses a challenge to President Hugo Chavez’s ambitious plans to sharply increase oil production in coming years.

Detractors from the government attribute many of the problems to insufficient investment into the oil sector as state oil monopoly Petroleos de Venezuela, or PdVSA, diverts large portions of revenue to government social programs that have become iconic under Mr. Chavez’s leadership.

Noticias 24 says there are now 24 dead and more than 50 injured.
